Family Counseling

Our families influence how we think, behave, and interact with the world. As a Marriage & Family therapist, I view individuals within the context of relational systems and look at how relationships with your family members may have influenced other relationships in your life (friendships, work relationships, romantic relationships). By uncovering patterns of behavior within your family of origin, you can often notice these same patterns in your other relationships and work toward changing them. Family therapy may include 1, 2, 3, or more individuals and is intended to reduce conflict, enhance healthy connection, and restore balance.

Common reasons for seeking family therapy include:

  • Divorce
  • Remarriage
  • Step-parenting
  • Parent-child conflict
  • Issues among siblings
  • Relocation/moving
  • Job loss or changes
  • Issues in school
  • Extended family concerns
  • Over-involvement or under-involvement of family members
  • Unexpected or traumatic loss of a family member
  • and many others…

Some goals of family therapy are to:

  • Develop strategies for building healthy relationships
  • Develop and maintain boundaries
  • Foster a sense of cohesion and communication among family members
  • Promote problem solving through understanding of family patterns and dynamics
  • Build empathy and understanding among family members
