Accelerated Resolution Therapy: How it Works and Why It’s a Game Changer for Trauma

You may have been Googling: Accelerated Resolution Therapy: How it Works, but Google no more – I’m about to tell you about this amazingly effective, short-term treatment for trauma.

But first – Do you feel like a past experience is keeping you stuck from showing up in life the way you truly want to? Or perhaps you’ve been in therapy for a while and have noticed some improvement but have yet to see the profound difference you’re looking for? You might also be a busy professional who knows you need to work on yourself but the time commitment of a weekly session doesn’t fit in your calendar. You need something faster and more focused.

If any of the above resonated with you, you are likely a good candidate for a trauma-intensive session using Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is like the cool cousin of EMDR (eye-movement desensitization & reprocessing). It’s designed to help people process trauma, anxiety, depression, and those emotional roadblocks that seem to just stick around and keep you stuck. ART uses a combination of eye movements, guided imagery, and voluntary image replacement to help your brain rewire how it stores painful or distressing memories.

Yes, it’s a bit odd sounding, but it works REALLY well. I like to call it *magic* even though there’s a lot of evidence to back it up because my clients see such profound results so quickly. ART has been shown to create relief for clients in as little as 1-5 sessions, but most clients I have worked with for ART are out of my office within 3 sessions. Research backs this up, too—check out these studies for more info on ART’s effectiveness:

How Does ART Work?

Let me help break this down and make it simple:

  1. Eye Movements: Your therapist will guide your eye movements back and forth while you think about a specific memory that is keeping you stuck. The best part? You don’t have to talk about the experience in detail. Most of the change from ART happens in your mind.
  2. Voluntary Memory/Image Replacement: Once that memory is activated, ART helps you replace the disturbing images tied to the memory with something more neutral or even positive. You don’t get rid of the memory, but you do change your perception toward it. Client’s report feeling more neutral or distanced to the experience and lose the strong emotional (and traumatic) feelings associated with it.
  3. Fast Results: Unlike traditional talk therapy where you might spend months unpacking a single event, ART often helps you feel significant relief after just a few sessions (sometimes as few as ONE session).

ART essentially reprograms your brain to disconnect emotionally from a problem and view it with a new perspective. You’ll remember the experience, but you’ll no longer hold onto the associated pain.

ART Therapy Intensives: Faster, Focused Healing

For those interested in this rapid trauma treatment, I offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy Intensives—a short-term, hyper-focused approach designed to create meaningful change in less time.

A therapy intensive might be perfect for you if:

  • You’ve been to therapy before but didn’t get the results you wanted.
  • You’re a busy professional who can’t commit to weekly sessions.
  • You want results yesterday and prefer focused, impactful work.
  • You’ve “talked your problems to death” but haven’t actually felt much change.

Intensives are like hitting the fast-forward button on your healing journey. They allow us to dive deep without the stop-and-start energy of weekly therapy. Plus, they’re particularly effective if you tend to intellectualize your emotions rather than feel them—ART bypasses the overthinking and works directly with your nervous system.

Appointments typically last between 90-120 minutes, and on average, only 2-5 sessions are needed to experience significant results.

Due to the structure and length of the appointment, this is not a service that insurance will typically fully cover. However, I can provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for partial reimbursement. Learn more about fees and insurance reimbursement here.

Is ART Right for You?

If you’ve been carrying around the weight of relational trauma—or any kind of emotional distress—ART might just be your game-changer. It’s especially helpful if you:

  • Feel stuck in recurring relationship patterns.
  • Have emotional triggers you can’t quite explain.
  • Are tired of traditional therapy feeling like endless small talk.

Are You Ready for Transformative Change?

Healing doesn’t have to take years, and it doesn’t have to feel like climbing Mount Everest in flip-flops. Accelerated Resolution Therapy offers a faster, gentler way to reprocess painful memories, release emotional baggage, and start showing up for yourself—and your relationships—in a whole new way.

If you want a modern approach to feeling better quickly and conveniently, send a message inquiring about a therapy intensive with me, Krysteena Wilson, LCPC. We can get to the root of your concern in under 5 sessions and obtain lasting change.
