If you’re struggling with communication and connection in your relationship, you’re not alone. Parenting, work, and the daily grind of our busy, modern day life can make it difficult to maintain a strong and healthy partnership. At Tree City Wellness, we specialize in helping individuals and couples just like you break free from unhealthy relationship patterns, communicate better, and create a thriving partnership.
If you’re considering couples therapy, you probably have questions. Below, we answer the most common relationship therapy questions to help you feel confident and informed before scheduling your first session.
1. How Do I Know If My Relationship Needs Therapy?
Many couples wait too long before seeking therapy, often until they feel completely disconnected or on the brink of separation. You don’t have to wait until things feel unfixable. Relationship therapy can help if you:
- Have the same argument over and over without resolution
- Feel more like co-parents or roommates than partners
- Struggle with resentment, emotional distance, or a lack of intimacy
- Avoid difficult conversations or feel unheard by your partner
- Want to break cycles of unhealthy relationship patterns you grew up with
Therapy isn’t just for crisis moments—it’s a powerful tool for strengthening and deepening your relationship at any stage.
2. What Can We Expect in a Relationship Therapy Session?
At Tree City Wellness, first and foremost – our sessions are focused on helping you both feel safe, understood, and equipped with tools to improve your relationship. In your first few sessions, we will:
- Explore the underlying emotional needs behind your conflicts
- Look at your family history and beliefs you developed about relationships over time
- Identify patterns of communication that aren’t working
- Teach you how to express your needs without escalating tension
- Provide practical strategies to reconnect and rebuild intimacy
Our work stems from attachment theory and emotionally focused therapy (EFT), an evidence-based approach that helps couples understand and change the deep-seated emotional patterns driving their interactions.
Each of our therapists also bring their own unique style, education, and expertise in their work with clients which may include interventions from the Developmental Model, Internal Family Systems, Somatic-based approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and more.
3. Will Relationship Therapy Work If Only One of Us Wants to Attend?
While couples therapy is most effective when both partners are engaged, individual therapy can still be beneficial. If one partner is hesitant, individual sessions can help you:
- Gain clarity about what you need in the relationship
- Learn strategies to improve communication on your own
- Explore and heal personal wounds that may be impacting the relationship
Sometimes, one partner starting therapy can positively influence the relationship and encourage the other to join later.
4. How Long Does Relationship Therapy Take?
The length of therapy varies based on your relationship’s needs and goals, however, couples therapy tends to be shorter-term than individual therapy. Some couples see improvement in just a few months, while others benefit from ongoing support. On average, many couples attend therapy for 12-20 sessions, meeting weekly then spacing out to biweekly once improvement starts to be made.
5. What If We’re Not Married? Can We Still Do Couples Therapy?
Absolutely! Relationship therapy is for any couple—whether you’re dating, engaged, married, or in a long-term partnership. We welcome and affirm all couples, including LGBTQ+ relationships and non-traditional partnerships.
6. Can Therapy Help Us Rebuild Trust After Infidelity?
Yes, relationship therapy can be incredibly beneficial in healing from infidelity. While rebuilding trust takes time, therapy can help by:
- Understanding why the betrayal happened
- Creating a safe space for honest conversations
- Developing a plan for healing and restoring trust
- Establishing new relationship agreements moving forward
Healing from infidelity is challenging, but many couples come out stronger with the right support.
7. How Much Does Relationship Therapy Cost? Do You Take Insurance?
Tree City Wellness is a private-pay boutique group practice, meaning we do not bill insurance directly. This allows us to provide a higher level of personalized care without restrictions imposed by insurance. Therapy is an investment in your relationship, and we believe that prioritizing your emotional well-being has long-term benefits for you, your partner, and your family.
We are happy to provide superbills for clients who wish to seek reimbursement from their insurance provider. Many clients also use HSA/FSA funds to cover therapy costs.
Additionally, we work with a third-party called Mentaya who offers to submit out-of-network claims for you for a small fee. Although every insurance plan is different, Mentaya has been able to help our clients receive 30%-60% back in reimbursement for the total cost of sessions. You can check your insurance plan’s eligibility HERE.
